In 1995, on one
of the warmest summer days in August, I was driving down Ashland Avenue in
Chicago, Illinois, and I decided to pull over and admire the puppies in the
window of a pet store. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that
I would get a puppy because in my apartment building, in Oak Park, the landlord did
not allow pets. I began to think of ways that I could slip the puppy
into my apartment, train it, and prove to the landlord that my dog is
obedient, potty trained, and would not disturb the tenants. Thus, the search
and my story begin. As I walked the pet store to select my distinct
pooch of choice, there were several factors in the selection process; it had to
be a female dog, no more than 20 pounds, and a loyal breed that was easy to socialize with
other dogs. In addition, she must show signs of leadership and have a restless personality,
like me. More important, it had to be a dog that was suitable for apartment
living. Well, I found her. She was a cute, buff colored cocker spaniel, 9
weeks old, and I named her Mayday! Mayday was fun, frisky, smart, and an alpha
dog. She was perfect and full of life, spirit, and personality. I
immediately fell in love with her. Mayday passed away on Saturday, November 19,
2011 at 9p.m. Present were her favorite things, food, toys, her Burberry blanket and
pillow, and me, her neurotic owner (lol). Yes, I am sad, but I will forever celebrate Mayday’s
life because I truly loved her.
Rest in peace,
my faithful companion!!!
